1) “Mon ami” is simply a cliché

Mon ami (or mon amie in the feminine) method “my friend.”

If there’s a French character in an American movie, castle basically need to say it at part point. Prefer in this scene of Beauty and the Beast.

It’s kind of prefer saying Bonjour v a really heavy accent. Sure, it reflects that the personality is French, yet it’s no something you’d actually hear in France.

Using “Mon ami” alone together “Hello mine friend” will certainly make friend sound like you only know French clichés – and also you worthy better!

It’s basically the oral version that Marcel Gotlib’s SuperDupont: a funny stereotypical representation that no exist.

By the way, in the French (dubbed) version, Lumière is… Italian! At the very least that’s what his accent implies, through his rolled R’s – for example in “Y’a l’pour et y’a l’contre” (= “There space pros and also cons,” casual talked French) can you hear it?

Other works offered the exact same “trick” of transforming a French personality (in the initial version) right into an Italian one (in the French referred to as version), prefer Pepe le Pew / Pépé le Putois.

2) “Mon ami” in French: what it really means

Mon ami(e) is provided for really close friends.

You deserve to use that in a sentence. To introduce your friend, for example:Je te présente mon amie Marie.= “I introduce you come my girlfriend Marie” / “Here’s my girlfriend Marie.”

But using it top top its own, such together Bonjour, mon ami, comment ça va ? to average “Hello mine friend”, is a cliché.

When ns was working in Leeds, England on July 14th, kind people would great me a “Happy Bastille day” in French. That’s very nice! however “Le jour de la Bastille” does no exist in French – it’s simply “Le 14 Juillet”. One more misconception!

You deserve to find an ext in mine lesson: Le 14 Juillet

3) “Mon ami” : What you deserve to say rather

Instead of “mon ami”, you can simply use your friend’s name. Because that instance:Je suis là, mon ami ! → Je suis là, Marc != ns here, my an extremely close friend! → ns here, Marc!

Or girlfriend can also just say… nothing!

Bonjour, mon ami. → Bonjour.= Hello, my friend. → Hello.
